Mosquitoes Often Rest in Shaded Vegetation During the Day

Mosquitoes are commonly found in shrubs, ornamental plants, ground cover, beneath decks, around wooded edges and in other shaded areas that hold moisture and protect them from the sun.

Standing water can also support mosquito breeding. Even small amounts of water in containers, clogged gutters, toys, tarps, plant saucers and other objects may produce mosquitoes close to the home.

Getting Bitten Every Time You Go Outside?

Heavy mosquito activity may be related to shaded vegetation, nearby woods, standing water, drainage issues or neighboring properties. Regular treatment can help reduce mosquito activity around the areas you use most.

Mosquito Habitat

Common Areas Where Mosquitoes Rest and Breed

Our treatments focus on areas that provide shade, moisture and protection from wind and sunlight.

🌿

Shrubs and Dense Vegetation

Mosquitoes frequently rest on the undersides of leaves in shaded, humid landscaping during the daytime.

💧

Standing Water

Buckets, toys, plant saucers, tarps, birdbaths and clogged containers can hold enough water for mosquitoes to reproduce.

🌳

Wooded Borders

Shaded woodlines, leaf litter and dense natural areas may support mosquito activity around the edges of the yard.

Under Decks and Porches

Protected and damp areas beneath outdoor structures may provide resting locations close to patios and seating areas.

Landscape Beds

Ground cover, dense ornamental plants and heavily shaded beds may hold moisture and shelter adult mosquitoes.

Gutters and Drainage Areas

Clogged gutters, low spots and poor drainage may create standing water that supports mosquito breeding.

Our Treatment Approach

Targeted Mosquito Treatments for Resting Areas

Our technicians inspect the property and apply treatment to the areas where mosquitoes are most likely to rest. We also point out standing water and property conditions that may be contributing to the problem.

  • Inspection of the yard and surrounding vegetation
  • Treatment of shrubs and ornamental landscaping
  • Targeting of shaded lawn and wooded edges
  • Treatment around patios, decks and outdoor living areas

What to Expect

Mosquito Control Is an Ongoing Reduction Service

No outdoor treatment can guarantee that every mosquito will be eliminated. Mosquitoes may fly onto the property from neighboring yards, wooded areas, wetlands and other nearby locations.

Regular seasonal treatments, standing-water reduction and proper yard maintenance work together to provide the best possible reduction throughout the warmer months.

Mosquito Prevention Tips

Ways to Reduce Mosquito Breeding Around Your Property

Removing standing water is one of the most important steps property owners can take between professional treatments.

Empty Standing Water Empty buckets, toys, tarps, flowerpots, wheelbarrows and other containers after rainfall.
Clean Gutters Remove leaves and debris that may prevent water from draining properly through gutters and downspouts.
Maintain Birdbaths Empty, clean and replace the water regularly to prevent mosquito larvae from developing.
Trim Dense Vegetation Reduce overgrown shrubs, weeds and ground cover around patios, decks, walkways and entrances.
Correct Drainage Problems Address low spots, leaking outdoor faucets and areas where water remains for several days after rain.
Check Outdoor Equipment Inspect grills, furniture covers, play equipment and stored items for pockets of trapped water.

Questions & Answers

Mosquito Control Frequently Asked Questions

When is mosquito season in Northern New Jersey?

Mosquito activity generally increases during the spring and remains active through the warmer months and early fall. Rainfall, humidity and temperature can affect activity levels.

How often should my yard be treated?

Our standard Yard Defense program generally includes monthly treatments from April through October. Natural treatment programs may require service approximately every 21 days.

Do you treat the entire lawn?

Mosquito treatments are focused mainly on shrubs, vegetation, shaded landscaping, wooded edges and other areas where adult mosquitoes are likely to rest.

Will one mosquito treatment eliminate all mosquitoes?

No. Mosquito control is a reduction service. Mosquitoes may fly onto the property from neighboring yards and surrounding areas, so regular treatments provide better seasonal control.

Do I need to be home during treatment?

In most cases, you do not need to be home as long as our technician can access the treatment areas and gates are unlocked. People and pets should remain away during treatment and until the treated areas have dried.

Is mosquito treatment safe around children and pets?

Products are applied according to their labels. Children and pets should remain away from the treatment area during the application and until the treated surfaces are completely dry.

Do you offer a natural mosquito-control option?

Yes. Natural treatment options are available. Because these products generally have a shorter residual period, treatments may be scheduled approximately every 21 days.

Can you treat my yard before an outdoor event?

Yes. Special-event mosquito treatments are available for parties, weddings, cookouts and other outdoor gatherings. Treatment should be scheduled before the event date.

Does mosquito treatment also help with ticks?

Yard Defense can include both mosquito and tick control. Although some treatment areas overlap, each pest requires attention to its specific habitat and activity areas.

Can you guarantee there will be no mosquitoes?

No. Mosquito treatment provides reduction rather than complete elimination. Weather, standing water and mosquitoes entering from nearby properties can affect activity between treatments.
